Clear Project

/ THE CHALLENGE

DESIGN A FAMILY OF DIFFERENT PRODUCTS BUT YET MAINTAINING SINGULARITY AND CONSISTENCY

The Internet of Things (IoT) is fueling innovation in nearly every part of our lives. Simply connecting the “things” that were never connected before is leading to new data insights that translate into meaningful change.

Gartner, Inc. forecasts that 6.4 billion connected things will be in use worldwide in 2016, up 30 percent from 2015, and will reach 20.8 billion by 2020. It is a huge potential of thousands of new connected things bringing a tidal wave of new data.

Yet there are barriers slowing IoT adoption.

Clear Project is part of Intel IoT Platform, built to help the growth of this new market. Designed for the Open Source ecosystem - where anyone can take part of this - Clear Project is enabling to this future happen. And we, as designers, have contributed to give a shape to this whole new world.

THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE
WAS YET TO COME

How to best represent different needs - clear, Linux and IoT - together?

After days of discussion and roughs, we came up with three different approaches, based on: circles, because they are perfect, balanced and clean; stained glasses, because they emanate light through their transparency; and crystals, because they are translucent, solid and desirable.

Rounds of approvals later, the Crystal’s approach was selected, because was the best representation of “Clear” concept. Also, Silicon, the principal material used to create transistors, has a special affinity to crystals. Silicon comes from high purity quartz crystals after heating in high temperatures.

Now we had a starting, but the biggest challenge was yet to come.

A PROJECT THAT IS BUILDING
A LINUX OS DISTRIBUTION
FOR VARIOUS CLOUD USE CASES

The brand creation was based on two key elements. First, the penguin: it has a very tight relation with Linux, it’s a well known global element so we took this as an opportunity to reinforce this intention. Second, the crystal shapes: to create a consistent family of branded symbols they all have to look similar, mainly we use similar shapes, palette and angles, tweaking and playing with it to reach different results but maintain its look.

THREE-DIMENSIONAL

This concept is 3d printable and collectible, making the products closer to the real world. A whole family of logos that could be on your desk.

DIFFERENTIATION

Composed by triangular shapes, respecting 3d lights, colored by gradients. It’s different than commons flat and realistic symbols.

SCALABILITY

Made by polygons, it’s a mathematical illustration full of rich patterns to compose a logo family.

THE POWER OF THE WINDS
TURNED INTO BRANDS

Zephyr, Pali and Ostro are Open Source operational systems built to enhance the development of IoT projects. They took inspiration on winds, to represent how light they are, but still powerful.

Zephyr is referred to Zephyrus, an ancient Greek god of the west wind. Pali is a section of the windward cliff in Hawaii, while Ostro, also known as Scirocco, is a traditional southerly wind of the Mediterranean Sea.

But how to represent the wind if they are not visible to human eyes? Also, the wind icon has too many curves, which requires too many triangles to draw, affecting our “clear” concept and the reductions of the design.

Throughout the design process, we came up with several approaches but our final concept was based on the power of wind over objects related to air. The kite was our choice for Zephyr: it is lightweight, stable and balanced, and it uses the air to glide long distances without the need of a power supply. It proved to be easily understood and fully aligned with the proposal of this IoT product.

MAINTAINING THE CONSISTENCY

Maintaining the same visual identity of Clear Linux and the same concept line of Zephyr, our approach for Pali, after a series of tests, was a hang gliding. Why? Because it shows mobility dynamics during the flight, the same idea that we have on wearables and mobile devices, the reason this product was built.

/ OSTRO

ROBUSTNESS AND CONTROL

Ostro Project is designed specifically to support IoT device development. It integrates connectivity and networking, device-to-device interconnectivity standards, pre-configured sensors, and over-the-air update capabilities. It was built with security in mind, easy and customizable. In short terms: robust.

That’s why we chose an air hot balloon to represent its potential, your size compared with the other of the family and your industrial possibilities and applications, for example. It is huge. It shows power but with control.

/ SOLETTA

AMPLIFYING THROUGH REFLECTION

Soletta is a framework that offers a high level software library for IoT development, working from prototype to product even in the smallest hardware and over different operational systems. It enhances the process, making it easier, faster and more accessible. It amplifies efficiency by reducing effort.

The name Soletta appeared in a book called Green Mars (1994), by Kim Stanley Robinson. It means: “A circular slatted array of solar sail mirrors, placed between the Sun and Mars. Aligned to focus inward sunlight what would have just missed the planet”.

Why this design? Because a single flash of light directed to the star crystal is enough to be reflected multiple times, amplifying it widely. Also, each point of the crystal is connected, creating an ecosystem where every mirror shares light. It is more with less, as the product purpose.
